Pacific Lamprey at the Oregon Zoo

This video shows how a Pacific lamprey digs a redd, or nest. Both male and female lamprey will work to construct redds, with males initiating the nest as one means to attract mates. Like salmon and steelhead, Pacific lamprey use their caudal, or tail fins, to shape the nest. Unlike salmonids, lamprey also use their suction disk mouths to move larger rocks and cobble.
