Common nighthawk on Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge

Just chillin......... Common nighthawks are most active from half an hour before until an hour after sunset, and again starting an hour before sunrise. They are very well camouflaged, and can be hard to spot on their day perch. This one was on a cottonwood branch, waiting for the sun to go down a little more before hunting insects for the evening meal. Until then, it was soaking up the evening sun. Photo: Tom Koerner/USFWS
