Tree Planting Day in Lasnamäe
U.S. Embassy staff joined a large group of volunteers at Tondiloo Park in Lasnamäe on October 25th to help plant 300 new trees in the park and neighborhood area as part of the "Greening Lasnamäe" project. Although the weather was colder and windier than expected, approximately 500 volunteers braved the elements to come out and show their interest, support and enthusiasm in helping to make Lasnamäe a little bit greener.
A cross-section of residents, from young to old alike, including Estonian and Russian-language speakers, came together, registered, and headed off in small teams to individual tree planting sites all around the park. There were so many volunteers, in fact, that most all of the trees were up and standing just about three hours later. With the help of experienced tree planters and instructors, even those who had little experience with gardening found their enthusiasm and interest put to good use.
The "Greening Lasnamäe" project was supported in part by the U.S. Embassy in Tallinn, whose contribution helped to purchase a majority of the trees planted. The idea for the project was proposed originally during the "My Estonia" brainstorming sessions held earlier this year. Proposed by Jelizaveta Nikolajeva, a resident of Lasnamäe herself, the idea was selected as one of several proposals that could be realized quickly and effectively, and bring direct benefit to local residents.
