U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) Detector Dogs are participating in a feasibility study to detect the presence of the invasive beetle in Worcester, MA on Aug. 1, 2012. The ALB is an invasive insect that is killing trees in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Ohio. Four dogs are currently being trained to recognize beetle “frass” or excrement that the beetle leaves behind. This study is part of an important mission to protect neighborhood trees and this country’s valuable forest resources from this harmful pest. USDA photo by Anson Eaglin.
