Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack (right) talked about the many ways the Department of Agriculture can help the children and the workforce, during the National Governors Association Education, Early Childhood and Workforce Committeemeeting in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, February 26, 2012. He discussed the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards that encourage healthy food choices by providing a reduced cost for healthy produce while fully reimbursing the grocery store. Nutrition for schoolchildren was also addressed by highlighting new recipes at that make healthy choices, and tasty choices. Vilsack also encouraged growing vegetables at home and school gardens, pointing out the People’s Garden initiative which helps educate people in growing some of their own food.
