U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Washington Capitals defenseman Jeff Schultz and Caps volunteers, and mascot Slapshot will transform a grassy corner of the Powell Elementary School playground into a habitat garden and outdoor learning area on Thursday, June 9, 2011 in Washington, DC. The activities include building a path, planting plants and flowers and installing bird feeders, a bat house, and a tool shed. The garden will include a picnic area, outdoor classroom, hummingbird garden, bird habitat, monarch watch garden and native bee garden, and birdbath. USDA Executive Master Gardeners will be leading volunteer project teams. USDA challenges its employees to establish People's Gardens at USDA facilities worldwide or on this case, help communities create gardens. People's Gardens vary in size and type (this one being a habitat garden), but all have a common purpose - to help the community and the environment. USDA Multimedia Production by Lance Cheung.
