Community-built Irrigation Canal
An irrigation site at the Awda-Guanda Productive Safety Net site, in Tigray, Ethiopia. Through the USAID-supported Productive Safety Net Program beneficiaries receive food aid or cash in exchange for labor towards public works. Smallholder farmers around the country depend on rain-fed agriculture. Rain harvesting and irrigation canals such as this one are built by communities and who, as they prosper, purchase small water pumps.
