Food Security: A Family Affair

Selass Hailu is a mother of five whose household is one of the 21,000 in her drought-prone district of Awlaelo in Tigray participating in the Productive Safety Net Program and benefitting from the watershed irrigation works and check dam constructed by the participants. “Before we used to only have one harvest and now we have up to three. We eat better and four of my children can go to school. My husband does the plowing and I water and weed. We discuss the priorities for any extra money we make, for example, whether to spend it on fuel for a water pump or fertilizer or grain. But I do the selling. I’m a better negotiator and I bring the money home!”
