Celebrating World IP Day and Women in Innovation
To mark this year’s World IP Day -- Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity -- the U.S. Mission co-hosted with WIPO and the Austrian Mission a special screening of the documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story. The film recounts the life story of Hedy Lamarr, an Austrian Jewish émigré who was a 1940s Hollywood icon by day and an inventor by night. At the height of WWII, she invented radio skipping technology, which would lay the technological foundation for Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS. She gave her patent to the U.S. Navy, but received no credit for her contributions, and wound up impoverished at the end of her life and largely forgotten…until now. On this World IP Day, we celebrated all the visionary women who created game-changing innovations to better the world around them.
