bug of the day

It often helps to know on what plant an insect was found when you are trying to id it. In this case, we discovered this leaf beetle at the Dedham BioBlitz munching on the leaves of a beggartick plant (Bidens sp.). That made it pretty easy to navigate through to genus Calligrapha, subspecies Bidensomela. From there, it was a quick hop to Calligrapha bidenticola. So while this shot could have used some more lighting and focus, it was still good enough to figure out what we were looking at.
