bug of the day

There were a pair of red admirals (Vanessa atalanta) flying in circles all over my yard today. Nice of this one to stop and pause (with its wings open!) long enough for me to grab a photo.

The admirals seem to have migrated in over the past week or so - I saw two in Boston this week as well. You can learn more about the migration of red admirals and other Vanessa species at vanessa.ent.iastate.edu/.

Really beautiful capture, Jenn. At this time last week, several Red Admirals were in the field northwest of my backyard and I went out and took a bunch of photos using my digital SLR with the telephoto zoom lens attached. The camera I was using is made by the same company that made your point-and-shoot camera. :-)
