chippiwa legend says that during a time of famine, a mother bear and her two cubs, while looking for food, are forced into lake mIchigan by a raging fire on the Wisconsin side. they begin to swim across the lake. the mother bear reaches the michgian shore to wait for her cubs. they never come, and today are called north and south manitou islands. she waits for them still as sleeping bear dune faces lake michigan. sleeping bear dunes national shoreline, leelanau peninsula, michigan
