The first complete published text of the Greek New Testament, edited by Erasmus of Rotterdam, a Catholic, was of epochal significance. Parallel with the Greek text was a revised Latin translation made by him. This Greek text was used for the translation of the Bible into various European languages in the early Reformation era. In the preface to this edition, Erasmus also famously urged the translation of Scripture into the spoken languages of the people, including, ‘the Scots and the Irish’.
