Community Works to Re-Open Kindergarten

Vacant since 1994, the Meerim Kelechek Kindergarten in the village of Ton, Kyrgyzstan, now resounds with the voices of children after the community received a $10,000 grant through the UN Women Program and the Kumtor Operating Company. Using the money, community members purchased desks, chairs, teaching aids and other school essentials after they themselves rehabilitated the abandoned school building.
