Thararat "Nun" Panya, activist, law student from Thammasat University shares her story of harassment at her university during the “EQUALITY TALKS: My story of ending violence against women” event on 23 November, 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The event was held to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and to open the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. The event was organized by the United Nations Asia-Pacific Regional Coordination Mechanism Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (RCM TWG-GEEW), co-chaired by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), at the United Nations Conference Centre.
EQUALITY TALKS aims to raise public awareness and increase political commitment and action to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls. Under the global theme “Orange the World: #HearMetoo” the commemoration invited activists as story-tellers about ending violence against women. The event was attended by activists, women’s rights advocates, the diplomatic community, and UN personnel.
Throughout the 16 Days of Activism, the #DontTellMeHowToDress exhibition showcased victims’ clothing, challenging the notion that women’s appearance and behavior are to blame when they are assaulted and asked audiences to question the acceptance of sexual violence.
