UNOAU attends AU Peace and Security Council Session of July 2017
UNOAU was invited to address the July 2017 session of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) on behalf of the United Nations. This session convened to discuss and update on progress in mitigating threat posed by Boko Haram activity in the Lake Chad Basin region. While it was agreed that Boko Haram has been weakened by the Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF); it was noted that pockets of attacks in isolated areas and other threats to human security should be eliminated. Countries that delivered statements included Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gabon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo among others. The humanitarian situation on the ground resulting from Boko Haram activities was also discussed.
