2015, Fall | Civil Rights through the Américas Award
On September 18, 2015, the Américas Award partnered with Teaching for Change and Busboys & Poets to hold professional development workshop for K-12 educators in Washington, D.C. The evening focused on teaching civil rights through literature, and featured presentations by authors Duncan Tonatiuh and Margarita Engle; activities facilitated by Deborah Menkart of Teaching for Change; and curriculum materials introduced by Jonas Edman of Stanford University and Katrina Dillon of the University of New Mexico. Participants received curriculum materials, copies of the books discussed, and new or refreshed concepts to introduce to their students.
