Politicians learn about combating hate speech in South Sudan
United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Human Rights Division held a one-day workshop on November 19, 2018 for parliamentarians and representatives of different political parties to combat hate speech.

The Director of UNMISS Human Rights Division, Eugene Nindorera, expressed satisfaction that his team had organized such a workshop to help political leaders understand exactly what hate speech is, and how to combat it in the context of South Sudan.

The Deputy National Minister of Information Lily Abino Akol Akol urged all members of political parties who use social media to refrain from hate speech. Appreciating UNMISS’ contribution, she said the workshop had come at the right time as President Kiir has warned against hate speech during the implementation of the country’s revitalized peace accord. She also said the government is formulating laws “to criminalize hate speech.”
