Girard College Program at the Penn-MRSEC
Seventh-graders from Philadelphia’s Girard College, a K-12 school for economically disadvantaged students, got the chance to expand their comfort zones and actively engage in the pursuit of science this summer at Penn. They were participants in a week-long summer experience, the Girard College Program at the Penn NSF-Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). The program was introduced in June of 2011 as part of the MRSEC’s educational outreach. Six boys and six girls with an expressed interest in science are chosen to participate.

Over the course of the week, students are exposed to the physics of optics, physical properties of materials, solar and nuclear energy, robotics and other scientific experiences through hands-on activities and lectures to stimulate their interest in science and engineering careers. Penn faculty, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students from the School of Arts & Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science participate in this program.
