Wharton Executive MBA Cuba Trip 2015
The Wharton Executive MBA curriculum includes a Global Business Week during the fifth semester. For the first time, Cuba was on the list of destinations. The professors were Patricia Danzon and Kent Smetters and the T.A. was Wharton doctoral student Ambar La Forgia. The focus of the course was the Cuban health-care system and the Cuban economy’s transition. Among the 31 students on the trip were nine physicians, a pharmacist, six other health-care professionals (biotech, pharmaceuticals) and students from several other industries representing both the Philadelphia and San Francisco campuses. The six-day trip included a plenary session led by Cuban dignitaries and visits to a variety of organizations, including a hospital, primary care assistance institution, medical tourism clinic, biotech company, graphic artist cooperative and entrepreneurial spa. There were several cultural tours and a day trip to a Varadero where the participants met with the general manager of a Spanish-run resort.
