Heroism & Sacrifice 6

The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial is located in Nash Square in Raleigh. Sculpted by Cary, North Carolina artist Carl W. Regutti, the memorial was dedicated 6 May 2006. Entitled “Heroism & Sacrifice”, four bronze figures are shown life-size on a base of concrete and stone. A dying firefighter is on the ground, crushed by a steel beam, two are trying to rescue him and the last figure directs water to keep the flames at bay. Urgency and tragedy are plainly shown in the expressions, a face visible no matter where one stand to view this group. On the surrounding wall is a list of the fallen firefighters of the state.

Mr. Regutti’s background is unique as an artist. His earlier career was in environmental microbiology, chemistry, engineering and business management; he has been awarded patents for inventions in environmental technology. He is active in wildlife organizations and has had numerous commissions from a variety of firms and organizations. For more background on the sculptor see
