UN REDD Programme Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, the UN-REDD Programme is working on scaling up "Home Gardens" as a policy measure. This action was selected by the Government of Sri Lanka to increase tree cover and reduce the degradation of natural forests by providing alternative sources of firewood to further its National Strategy. This approach shows that REDD+ implementation does not always require expensive, complex interventions, and can rely on scaling up existing sustainable practices. The photos were taken in Kandy, which is known for its famous Home Gardens, the traditional Kandyian Spice Gardens, that feature timber trees, bananas, nutmegs, cloves, vegetables and rice paddy fields.
