Hands Around the World: Northern Ireland mural - Ballymena
The first of the Creative Peace Murals was made by the young people of Ballymena with assistance from local community groups, parents and friends. This mural marks the first in the series and was the inspiration for future designs.
The Creative Peace Murals, a collection of 11 tapestries made by communities across the world, are exhibited together for the first time in Westminster Hall as part of Arts in Parliament.
Each mural is a local art project which draws upon values and themes important to each community and includes the earth, sea and sky and illustrates day and night on the curve of the earth or on a horizon line. The inner panel in the landscape shows the history, geography and culture of the community or country. The outer border is made up of handprints, in gold, silver and copper by the participants of each mural and represents the people of the earth.
Arts in Parliament is an innovative arts programme of free events which brings arts, music, dance and poetry in the historic Houses of Parliament, celebrating artistic talent during the Olympic year.
