Pahu / Tariparau

by Mafatu Krainer

Different sizes of pahu may be played in pairs for variety of tone. The body of this large pahu is decorated with pāreu fabric under resin.

"I try to use a little bit more traditional fabrics. Like, stuff that they might make in Tahiti or with a Tahitian feel. Even the pāreu’s not made in Tahiti anymore either. It’s made wherever, you know. Some of these ones with the tiki design are actually made here in Honolulu. They’re a print from Tahiti Imports. So they have some nice prints, more Marquesan, but you know, same feel. Not traditional but it has that."
