Hayabusa Earth flyby closest approach
Approximately natural color image taken during Hayabusa probe's Earth flyby on 19 May 2004 at 04:00 UTC.
The composite is centered on Japan, but most of it is clouded over. For a labeled version click here. North is roughly at 2 o'clock. Distance at the time was about 60 000 km.
The grayscale area at top is the location of fixed 4 polarizer filters in the camera which affect color so the area was desaturated on purpose.
JAXA's official image release immediately after the flyby using the same data can be seen here (rotated 90 deg w/respect to this).
