Sweet Bandit

Bandit, 1977 - 2010 I am heartbroken... Ms. Bandit A gooey, messy, yummy treat Let's see, I'll take... THAT one! Bandit's BIG treat! How many licks... Look everybody, no paws! Andean Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), Bandit Life IS good! Bandit doing her best chipmunk impression! Discriminating taste Sweet Bandit aging gracefully Bandit takes a moment to pose for her personal photographer! Honey bear Happy Happy Birthday Bandit! With age comes wisdom Grapes of wrath Happy Canada Day!

It is with great sadness that I must report that Bandit passed away the night of November 29, 2010

Bandit was born at the Calgary Zoo on January 27, 1977. She arrived in Washington on June 18, 1991 and became a permanent resident on March 9, 1992. She was 33 years old at the time of her death which is very old for an Andean bear. In fact she was the second oldest in captivity

I visited her many, many times at the National Zoo starting in 1995.

Bandits numbers are:
SSP#110164
ISSB#137

For more info on these bears please go to; www.andeanbear.org

latin: Tremarctos ornatus
also known as:
spectacled bear
oso de anteojos
yura mateo
ucumari
pucca mate
(ref. "Great Bear Almanac")

ucumari; from the language of the Quechua (pronounced Kichwa) which was spoken by the Incas. (source:answers.com)

By best guesstimates there are only about 2000 of these bears left in the wilds of South America. These are the only bears of South America and one of only two remaining species of the short-faced bears. Their habitat is mainly in the NE of South America along the Andes mountains. They are small bears and only have 13 pairs of ribs (other bears have 14). They, like most bears, have a delayed implantation and prolonged gestation. Andean bears do not hibernate. They will nest in trees.

Some people have remarked about Bandits reddish fur. She looked much different back about 8-10 years ago!
Here are a few shots of her from the mid 90's!

Thank you for your comments! I was at one time and still am to a lesser degree a huge Polar Bear fan. That was until I ran across Bandit and Roger (since deceased).
I totally fell in love with these guys. I too love all bears, but this one took my heart!

Valerie, I am just making my way to your beautiful photos. This set of Bandit over the past 10 years is not only excellent photography in technical ways, but truly brings out her unique and gentle personality in a way that communicates her specialness to a viewer. These are outstanding photos that should inspire a greater notice and, of course, Love for these beings!!

She is over 30 - wow amazing! I love her colouring and I initially thought she was a young bear :) Well maybe she still is in some ways - like me. (Also born in the 70's)

Hi,
I work with Andean bears in Bolivia, and I was very interested in Bandit's face marks. I ask a friend who works at the zoo for pictures from the local residents, and mentioning Bandit case, and she told me that Bandit' sister, Puebla is in Dortmund zoo Germany. Here is Puebla:
