ZnO nanowires (branches) grown on spontaneously wet-etched random Si nanowire array (trunks) forming a nanoscale forest. This three dimensional structure offers dramatically enhanced surface area for chemical reaction and light absorption. This structure of this structure have successfully been demonstrated for the use as photoelectrochemical electrodes for splitting water into H2 and O2 by absorbed sunlight.
