Broad-tailed Hummingbirds
a gallery curated by Sheri L. Williamson
Photos selected to illustrate key field marks of Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, especially females and juvenile males. For additional identification help, please refer to A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America in the Peterson Field Guide Series. Note: Titles are provided by the photographers and may not be consistent with the field marks.
Sheri L. Williamson says:
This bird shows a typical tail color and pattern of a mature male, with a broad rufous margin on the basal two-thirds of R2 and solid black R5. The amount and distribution of rufous and green in R2-4 varies considerably. Some younger adult males will show muted versions of the juvenile tail pattern, complete with white at the tip of R5 (sometimes also R4).
