The Nines Hotel, Portland
Ideally situated next to bustling Pioneer Square, the Nines, Portland rests atop the landmark Meier & Frank Building and pays contemporary homage to the edifice's storied past, both in its striking décor and impeccable service. Flocked in glazed terra cotta, this fifteen story masterpiece was brought to life in 1909 and served as the flagship store and headquarters for Meier & Frank, once heralded as the largest retailer west of the Mississippi.
When the Nines opened in October 2008, guests found the upper levels of the building transformed from a solid box to a hollow square, resulting in a seven-story atrium affording views and natural light for all 331 accommodations. The $137-million renovation aimed for LEED silver certification in such efforts as plumbing that saves more than 500,000 gallons of water a year and energy drawn from wind power.
