Study of Study of Lions by Eugene Delacroix

Keys to Drawing, Chapter 2, Project 2A Copy a Master Drawing

Procreate on iPad Pro 9.7"

Exercise: Select one of the seven master drawings just discussed and copy it, using the same medium. To accurately reproduce the artist's handwriting, pay particular attention to the length of each stroke, connecting and disconnecting where the artist did. Strive for the same rhythm you imagine the artist was working in even though, in doing so, you will sacrifice some accuracy in proportions.

Work same size or larger and allow yourself 20 minutes for the drawing if you choose from among the first three artists and 30 minutes if you chose from among the last four. If you choose the Morandi, you may only want to do a portion because the crosshatch technique is very time-consuming.

I chose Eugene Delacroix, Study of Lions which was done in graphite. I used a pencil line of roughly the correct thickness. However, since the pressure sensitivity was off and my hand was loose, my lines are far more tenative than Delacroix's
