Keys to Drawing, Chapter 2, Project 2E - Match the Tones

Procreate on iPad Pro 9.7"

Exercise: As carefully and accurately as you can, match the tones in this photograph. You may want to lightly trace the main shape alongside to duplicate the tones. Build up the strokes slowly and patiently and pay particular attention to the hardness or softness of the edges. Squin frequently to compare your owrk with the photograph. Use a soft pencil and allow yourself 30 minutes.

With my iPhone, I took a photo of Howard Search's photograph in the book. I then imported that photo into procreate and traced it in a layer. I then deleted the layer and started shading using the image as a reference. Using pencil was a chore so I toned the entire paper using drag-and-drop of a grey swatch then switched quickly to a paintbrush and used the blending and erase to deal with my errors. In a couple places, I used the "old brush" setting to get thin lines I needed.
