Sunrise at Wild Goose Island Overlook

It is probably the most photographed spot in the park if not in all of Montana and it is not difficult to see why. The Lewis & Clark Mountains at sunrise provide a dramatic backdrop for this romantic little island that gets its name from a romantic story. A young warrior from one tribe fell in love with the a young maiden from another tribe. The two tribes were not friendly towards each other and didnot want the young man and woman to marry. To test their committment to one another the tribes brought them together on the island and left them for a time. The Great Spirit saw the love the two had for each other and knew the tribes would not ultimately let them be together so he set them free by turning the pair into geese, a birds which mates for life. When the tribes returned to the island to separate the two, they only found the two geese who then flew away together.
