The Shields Daily News for 26 November 1902 reports:
"Frank Hansen and Edward Andersen, seamen, belonging to Sweden, were charged at North Shields with stealing 5s from a till in the Cannon Inn, Middle Street. Mrs Meccellari stated her husband kept the above public house, and on Monday the two defendants went into the bar and asked for a glass of beer. After serving them, witness went into the kitchen and on returning missed the till. The two men were then leaving the public house. Miss Flannigan, a servant, deposed to finding the empty till near to where defendants had been standing. There was nobody in the bar but defendants between the time she last saw the till all right and missing it. Fined 10s each and costs divided".
