Interior of the Hanging Church (الكنيسة المعلقة), Cairo

Most commonly referred to as the "Hanging" or "Suspended" Church (El Muallaqa) for its location above a gatehouse of the Roman fortress in old Cairo, the Saint Virgin Mary's Church is one of the oldest Coptic Orthodox Churches in Cairo, as it was first mentioned in the 9th century, but it is believed that an earlier church might have been built on this site as early as the 3rd century. The Hanging Church has been the Seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria since the 11th century, when it was transferred to Cairo from Alexandria after the Arab invasion of Egypt.
