Great Horned Owl Babies

Best viewed large On Black.

If you look at the large size, it looks as if they are wearing masks.

Here's is some info from Owlbus Dumbledore: Owls dont make their own nests and Great Horned Owls usually take the nests of Red Tailed Hawks (with whom they share habitat) or crows...unfortunately for the babies, the parents don't repair the nest as it falls apart and considering their babies grow to be full size in about six weeks old, you can imagine how many of them end up on the ground (and then people pick them up and try to keep them as pets...which is a whole other dangerous and illegal issue). This is an amazing idea...and a much more solid nest for them.

This nest is along the nature trail. The nest is about 30-40 yards (meters) from the trail and up about 12 yards.

-Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as my most interesting photo.

- This photo won the Feathery Friday Baby Birdie Week on 9/2/06! Thanks to all who voted!! It's an honor. Tell your nature centers about these nests. It's a great way to help the owls out.
