The colours of the Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem
The Dome of the Rock (689-691 CE) is one of the holiest places in religion. It is not only believed to be built on the rock on which Abraham wanted to sacrifice his son Isaac, but also the rock from which Mohammed ascended to heaven, accompanied by the angel Gabriel. During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566) the exterior was covered with Iznik tiles. In 1993 king Hussein of Jordania paid for a complete reguilding of the dome, after its first guilding in 1920.
