Eadweard Muybridge's zoopraxiscope, 1893
Now this (unlike this) is a real zoopraxiscope disc, invented by Eadweard (supposedly pronounced Edward but I always pronounce it Ierdwierd) Muybridge in 1893 and introduced to great fanfare at the Chicago Columbian Exhibition. There's also an animation of the kicking mule, which can be seen in the comments.
