Another apple-red Russula emetica-type mushroom (whatever it is)
This is another apple-red Russula emetica-type mushroom. I know it's probably not the real Russula emetica - maybe it's Russula cremoricolor, Russula mairei, Russula bicolor, or Russula californiensis - take your pick! Whatever they are, they are absolutely beautiful mushrooms growing under Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) trees. (San Marcos Pass, 14 February 2013)
I've heard this mushroom called "The Sickener" - though it's not that bad! I like to nibble on it - it's spicy hot, like wasabi. There are rumors of people pickling them, and I'm interested in that. Sure, don't eat a plate of them, but handling them (and nibbling) won't hurt you at all. They are one of our most beautiful creatures!
