Tamil protesters clashed violently with police in Westminster this afternoon and 36 people were arrested as officers moved to break up a demonstration blocking the roads in Parliament Square.
Hundreds of British Tamils massed outside Parliament from this morning to call for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka, where the situation was described by the UN today as a bloodbath.
Two days of heavy shelling on a supposed safe haven inside Sri Lanka’s war zone has killed at least 430 civilians — and possibly as many as 1,000 — according to a government doctor in the area. More than 100 children have lost their lives.
Protesters had occupied the streets in Westminster since around 10.30am when they pushed through police lines, bringing traffic to a standstill and forcing tourist and commuter buses to perform U-turns.
