Togo, Kloto Forest (Kpalime Town)
Far up to the north of Togo we went into the hills where the villages are restoring forest in areas previously used as palm oil plantations. Palm oil is still used for local food and provides crucial calories to the local diet but the plantations are all for export and the pay is minimal so locals are really robbed of their land. This area is now being reforested and preserved, however, it will be a challenge since there are a lot of invasives and Teak planted here and return of the original forest is not possible.
We took a short forest walk during which a local village guide explained the use of plants for medicinal and culinary purposes and then had lunch and a dance performance at an old GErman hospital which is now used as a kind of motel although there is almost no tourism yet in this region.
