where is that? Great inspiration. Makes you realise how simple it can be.

This was shot close to the Stalheim Hotel in Norway, probably in 1888 or 1889. The Safety bicycles are shod with solid tyres so the date of 1898 on the photo is almost certainly not correct.

The bike shown side on is a Starley Pyscho, an early cable suspension bike, circa 1887.

The text at top right reads Year (år) in Danish or Norwegian.

It must be pre 1969. That's when Gore released Gore-Tex. Unless of course it's last week's tweed run?

Mikael - but the year is wrong. Probably not the hand of the photographer (Axel Lindahl, a Swedish landscape photographer).

Jim McGurn's On Your Bicycle book has another version of this pic, but without the annotation. He says pic was taken early 1890s, but doesn't mention location. The solid tyres are the giveaway; pneumatics were adopted very quickly and by 1892 the only cyclists on solid tyres were those on second-hand machines, and even these were quickly discarded. There four gents are affluent, and not on hand-me-downs.
