Traveling Babo at Easter Island (Rapa Nui)
At Ranu Raraku, or the "Nursery", where all Moai were carved on Easter Island. The Moai pictured here with Traveling Babo are partially buried on two different slopes of the volcanic cone of Ranu Raraku, these were Moai waiting to be transported to an ahu, or alter, around the island when all worked stopped on carving these immense statues. The Moai that you see sticking up out of the ground have bodies that extend down underground 20 - 40 feet, all the way to the waist. Centuries of erosion from the slopes above have covered all but the tops of these giants. December 2006/January 2007.
