Sony TR-5

A slight re-design of Sony's very first commercially released radio ever, the TR-55. This is extremely rare, only a handful are known to exist in the hands of collectors. Released in April of 1956 (about 8 months after the TR-55) for the domestic Japanese market. It sold in Japan for 18,900 yen and only about 3,500 were made. An unspecified amount made their way into Canada via Gendis (General Distributors) - this one found its way to me via Vancouver (West Coast of Canada) on November 12, 2007.

This is the same basic cabinet as the historic TR-55 but for the TR-5 the headphone jack was moved to the side of the cabinet and the metal clasps that fastened the rear cabinet were removed. I've noted many electronic variations between the TR-5 and 55 as well. The placement of components is different.

The TR-5 was available in green, maroon and ivory. The cabinet for the maroon version was very brittle and unstable thus it did not survive the years of use well.

This example has several "battle scars" but I'm still extremely pleased and lucky to have one.
