Portugal – Broad Gauge
The broad gauge in Portugal of 1665mm was fractionally narrower than the 1674mm used in Spain. However, this did not prevent through workings between the two countries.

The line featured here is that which runs eastwards from Porto along the Douro valley to Barca d’Alva on the Spanish frontier. In 1967 most trains were steam-hauled, usually by one of the attractive classes of 4-6-0.

Regrettably, our time in Portugal was all too short – it would have been wonderful to have spent an entire week along the Douro valley line alone!
