This was taken the same day as yesterday's photo. While driving to Devil's Den, on the last hairpin bend, there were these guys happily feasting on a roadkill. I stopped in the middle of the road and tried to get a shot, but I was not that lucky :-( The vulture flew up to a nearby tree. I realized stopping in the middle of a 2 lane road on a blind curve would make me a companion for the roadkill already there, and, of course, the prey for my subject. I made a U-turn and was on the other (relatively safer) side and tried to get a shot of this one on the tree. The sun was against me and I had a point and shoot. I tried my best to get a decent shot.
As I was trying to get this shot, I heard wingflaps, and saw that I had company, more than one. But they were all way high up on the trees, watching me. And I noticed one fly across the creek (which runs parallel to that road) and sit on a branch and, wow, did the courtship dance! My poor camera, it tried it's best, I should say :)
I have a problem ID-ing this. Is this the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura)? Do all Turkey Vultures have a read head? This one was gray, for sure. Bird people, MAY DAY!!
Have a happy Feathery Friday :-)
UPDATE: I switched this photo with the first one on comments section as that shows more details. If you see comments about someone liking "the second one" it is this one :)
Thank you Danny and Doc for the positive ID.
