Night Herons are found in mainland Europe, Africa, Asia and North and South America. The bird is not found in Britain except as a lost migrant. The mainland European birds migrate to Africa in the Winter and return to their breeding grounds in the Spring. Some birds overfly Europe and end up here, causing a stir amongst the twitchers.
As a bird had been reported in West Cornwall during the last few days I went in search of it....and as you can see I managed to find it. The bird was on a small island in the middle of the village pond in Polgigga.
Note the remarkable plumes on its head.
