This is the Great Blue Heron that frequented the pond near my house. It has now moved on to warmer territory I suppose, because it has not been seen since this photo was taken.
For this photo I had set up for about an hour waiting for it to "fish" its way around the pond as I was hoping to get that "National Geographic" shot that I had been trying for most of the summer. Just as the bird was getting into camera range the Golden Retriever that lives across the pond spotted me and jumped in to swim across in hopes that I had the usual tennis ball with me. Of course this bird was having no part of this game. It quickly leaped into the air flew away from the dog and right toward my location! Now, this is where it gets real interesting! I think that we were both more than a little surprised to make eye-camera contact! So, my first few shots were almost unrecognizable. However, I was able to compose myself in that split second or two and squeeze off this final shot as it flew away from me. As I said before, I have not seen this beauty since this photo but I look forward to its return next spring - who knows, maybe it will bring friends and family
