Easy Button Hack Step 1

    Prev Next

This is the Staples Easy Button. They sell them for $5 each. When you press it, it says "That was easy!"

Some folks have been hacking them, trying to be able to record a new saying on them. I didn't care much about that. What I see is a big-ass red momentary switch for $5.

What can you do with a big-ass momentary switch? Replace the crappy little doorbell switch that opens the garage door, the one that rarely works, the one that's falling apart.

Here's the whole Flickr set and the write-up on my blog.

Make sure to check out the important safety warning!

Great marketing, so of course now I want an easy button. Might not make my life any easier, but I can still dream can't I?

All easy button sale proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Club of America.

sorry for my noob question but is this switch normally open or normally closed?

      Normally open.

It actually ended up not working all that well. There's more internal resistance than the garage door opener likes, so it only worked intermittently anyway.
