Swiss railways: BLS (2011)
Privately-owned BLS (an acronym for Bern–Lötschberg–Simplon) is Switzerland's second-largest railway company, after federally-owned SBB. Its routes are centered on the national capital of Bern, and extend southward to Brig by way of the historic Lötschberg tunnel, completed in 1913, and the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, which opened in 2007. The older tunnel is now used primarily for regional train service, and for auto transport. The base tunnel is used by intercity passenger trains and by freight trains en route to Italy by way of the Simplon Tunnel, between Brig and Domodossola. We rode BLS on the middle section of the Golden Pass route from Interlaken to Zweisimmen, and I also rode the regional service from Spiez to Brig via the original Lötschberg tunnel.
