Swiss railways: SBB (2011)
We visited Zurich at the beginning of our two-week stay in Switzerland; the first photos in this album were taken at the city's main rail station (Zurich HB), which handles more than 2,000 trains daily. Intercity trains to and from Zurich are operated by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), while suburban (S-Bahn) trains are part of the ZVV (Zürcher Verkehrsverbund) network. We rode SBB trains from Zurich to Lucerne (site of the comprehensive Swiss Transport Museum); Interlaken to Bern; Montreux to Brig; Brig to Domodossola, Italy; Locarno to Bellinzona; Bellinzona to Göschenen; Chur to Zurich; and Zurich to Basel. The last several images in this series were taken at the AlpTransit visitor center at Pollegio. They show an actual cutting blade from one of the tunnel boring machines used to excavate the Gotthard Base Tunnel, and a detailed model of one of these huge and complex machines.
